Have heard from a number of Republican party officials in Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi that McCain considered Fl governor Crist but the rumors of he may be gay killed choosing him. Also Miss. Governor Haley Barbour was considered but many didnt like his demeanor and “looks”, so McCain chose Riley, mainly due to his Reagan looks, his appeal even to democrats (59%), and the fact that Alabama has the best economy in the country, and under Riley has landed more economic projects than any governor in the states history… and that could appeal greatly to higher unemployment democrat leaning states such as Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Iowa. Also its not surprising as McCain visited Alabama 9 times from 2005 to 2006 (before he announced he was running for president).

It is my contention that if Obama had picked Hillary as his running mate, he would be up by 10% in the polls. I do not think McCain would have thrown the Democrats a screw ball by picking Palin because a woman was already on the ticket. My wife and I both supported Hillary and were so upset when he passed over Hillary for VP that we have decided to support McCain even though we are Democrats. I don’t think states like Florida, Ohio, and Michigan would even be in play had Obama chosen Hillary. McCain can’t win without 2 of those 3 states.
