While these days I’ve lost all interest in online relationships and friendships, I used to be really well into it. And I have chatted online with people from (potentially) all over the world. Potentially, because when making online friends, those I was able to make were from the same areas all the time. Those areas being the socially conservative – Republican! – areas of the US. The midwest, the south, Texas…. even then being in a very small town or village in a VERY remote area appeared to be an absolute prerequisite (the more small and remote the more Republican). I’m intrigued as to why especially as I’m a very liberal person. (And even that was not enough in itself – it seemed there was usually a mental health problem, or an obesity problem, and a great many of them were bisexual.)
So people’s loneliness played a significant part for sure, but it was very unlikely that people from the liberal parts of the country would even begin to give me the time of day. Democrat areas – liberal places – places like New York metro, California, New England, southern Florida. It wasn’t that there are not many people from these places to potentially talk to. Far from it.
But all too often I found that people would get to know me a little online, get some sort of snapshot of my life, and (mainly because I am single) they wondered, were inquisitive, and looked for what from their point of view might be ‘wrong’ just because I was single and never married.
But that was something that went hand in hand with liberal areas and societies. Occasionally I came into contact with folks outside the US.. well, by far the worst person for this was from Sweden. Countries don’t come much more socially liberal than that, but I also seem to have had a heck of a time with people from Ireland. And unfortunately it was almost certain I would be treated badly by Canadians, whose country is considered more liberal than the US.
But people from conservative places usually didn’t bother what might be supposedly ‘wrong’ with me.
So it was in the conservative areas…. indeed the most deeply conservative areas, that I was able to have any connection with people online. You’ll have to believe me when I say there was a predictable continuum between socially conservative/liberal places vis-a-vis my ability to fit in with people online.
I guess making far more online friendships with red state (and rural) people and far less blue state (and urban) was nothing to do with me, but rather with the socio-geographical patterns coming online – and how much they felt in need of online friendship bearing in mind their rurality and living in conservative societies (which maybe restricted them?)
I would like to ask if anyone knows of any reasons for all of the above, other than the rural/urban, conservative/liberal theories; and are others’ experiences of online friendship anything similar?

On Tuesday, Nevada state officials raided ACORN’s Las Vegas office after election authorities accused the group of submitting multiple voter registrations with fake and duplicate names.
This group is inextricably linked to Barack Obama.
In addition to the Las Vegas raid, fraud allegations against ACORN keep piling up:
– Lake County, Ind., election officials this month rejected a large portion of the 5,000 registration forms ACORN turned in after conducting registration drives in the area all summer. Some vote canvassers had pulled names and addresses from telephone books and forged signatures.
According to local reports, “large numbers of voter registration forms bore signatures all in the same apparent handwriting style” and “apparently the organization’s canvassers broke rules to meet ACORN-set voter registration quotas to get paid.” The fake registrants included dead people and underage kids.
– Last month, Milwaukee, Wis., officials discovered at least seven felons employed as voter registration workers for ACORN and another affiliated group. They also uncovered a raft of problematic voter registration cards.
The state GOP accused ACORN of attempting to enroll dead, imprisoned or imaginary people to voter rolls. Fraud has plagued ACORN’s Milwaukee chapter since the last election cycle.
– In Florida, in Orange County alone, ACORN workers turned in multiple copycat forms for six separate voters over the summer. According to the Miami Herald, “One individual had 21 duplicate applications.”
Election officials had flagged ACORN’s negligent practices several months ago, but it may be too late: In Orange, Broward and Miami-Dade counties, ACORN has signed up 135,000 new voters, nearly 60 percent of them registered as Democrats that constitute a fifth of all new voters in that region.
– In Ohio, large numbers of homeless people received free van and bus rides to register. Shelby Holliday, a reporter for Palestra.net, filmed ACORN shuttling prospects to the polls. She told me she spoke with one homeless woman who told her ACORN “told her who to vote for if she wanted a ‘better life,’ and told her not to worry about jury duty (one of the reasons this homeless woman didn’t want to register) because the government probably wouldn’t be able to track her down. She was registering with a temporary address.”
